Hearing a 60-Year-Old Song Got Me Thinking about its Relevance to Today

Kate Jones Season 3 Episode 131

I recorded this short piece before Veterans Administration nurse and U.S. citizen Alex Pretti was murdered in Minneapolis. He died because he had stepped out from the crowd to aid a fellow peaceful protester. These are crazy times and, more than ever, we need to follow his example and be more kind, not less so. Kindness is a form of love and, ultimately, love is far stronger and more resilient than the hate of bullies. In honor of Alex Pretti and all those who have been harmed by hate, let's spread love and lots of it.

The artwork in the thumbnail is by Wyoming artist Bob Jones. And by the way, "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield made VegOut newsletter's list of "8 songs boomers still love because it reminds them who they were before responsibilities." Check out the entire list here.

And here's a link to the official Buffalo Springfield video along with the full lyrics:

There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
A-telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop
Children, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down
There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Are getting so much resistance from behind
Time we stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down
What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and a-carrying signs
Mostly say hooray for our side
It's time we stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down
Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
Step out of line, the man come and take you away
We better stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down
We better stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down
We better stop now
What's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down
We better stop
Children, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down

00:00:01.520 --> 00:00:03.140
Hello, this is Kate Jones.

00:00:03.680 --> 00:00:05.840
This morning in the car, my husband and

00:00:05.840 --> 00:00:07.140
I happened to hear

00:00:07.520 --> 00:00:08.740
a really old song,

00:00:09.200 --> 00:00:11.920
"For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield, written

00:00:11.920 --> 00:00:13.060
by Stephen Stills.

00:00:14.165 --> 00:00:16.105
It's from 1966.

00:00:16.485 --> 00:00:18.645
Could have been written for today, the lines

00:00:18.645 --> 00:00:19.785
are so appropriate:

00:00:20.965 --> 00:00:22.745
"There's something happening here.

00:00:23.125 --> 00:00:25.385
What it is ain't exactly clear.

00:00:26.085 --> 00:00:28.105
There's a man with a gun over there

00:00:28.645 --> 00:00:29.465
telling me

00:00:29.880 --> 00:00:30.860
I got to

00:00:31.440 --> 00:00:31.940
beware."

00:00:32.520 --> 00:00:34.520
Later on in the song, there's a verse

00:00:34.520 --> 00:00:38.440
about paranoia striking deep and how "into your

00:00:38.440 --> 00:00:40.060
life it will creep.

00:00:40.760 --> 00:00:42.700
It starts when you're always afraid.

00:00:43.495 --> 00:00:45.575
Step out of line, the man come and

00:00:45.575 --> 00:00:46.395
take you away."

00:00:47.975 --> 00:00:50.375
The song is also a cautionary tale about

00:00:50.375 --> 00:00:53.115
our own behavior: "Battle lines being drawn.

00:00:53.495 --> 00:00:55.915
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong.

00:00:56.695 --> 00:00:58.715
A thousand people in the street,

00:00:59.510 --> 00:01:00.330
singing songs

00:01:00.710 --> 00:01:02.010
and carrying signs,

00:01:02.470 --> 00:01:04.250
mostly say hooray

00:01:04.630 --> 00:01:05.690
for our side."

00:01:07.110 --> 00:01:09.510
The song concludes with a call to action

00:01:09.510 --> 00:01:10.730
for right now:

00:01:12.465 --> 00:01:14.005
"We better stop now.

00:01:14.465 --> 00:01:15.605
What's that sound?

00:01:16.465 --> 00:01:18.565
Everybody look what's going down.

00:01:19.025 --> 00:01:20.405
We better stop, children,

00:01:21.185 --> 00:01:22.245
what's that sound?

00:01:22.865 --> 00:01:25.445
Everybody look what's going down."

00:01:26.465 --> 00:01:28.620
And what does it mean anyway?

00:01:30.120 --> 00:01:32.520
I think part of it really is that

00:01:32.520 --> 00:01:33.980
we have to look at our own

00:01:34.360 --> 00:01:34.860
stuff

00:01:35.400 --> 00:01:35.900
and

00:01:37.080 --> 00:01:38.700
conduct ourselves, perhaps,

00:01:39.720 --> 00:01:42.460
in the very best way we possibly can.

00:01:43.065 --> 00:01:45.465
Lift our vibes and lift other people along

00:01:45.465 --> 00:01:46.045
the way.

00:01:46.585 --> 00:01:47.085
Kindness,

00:01:47.545 --> 00:01:50.585
just everyday kindness, can go a long way

00:01:50.585 --> 00:01:51.325
in healing

00:01:52.185 --> 00:01:52.685
whatever

00:01:53.065 --> 00:01:55.005
the heck is going down.

00:01:57.250 --> 00:01:59.110
There's a link to the

00:01:59.730 --> 00:02:00.230
official

00:02:00.610 --> 00:02:01.750
version of the song

00:02:03.010 --> 00:02:05.010
and I also have the full lyrics in

00:02:05.010 --> 00:02:05.670
the description.

00:02:06.850 --> 00:02:07.890
Thanks for listening.
