Everyday Creation
Everyday Creation is about purpose, awe and good vibrations. The show's title refers to three types of creation: The ways we express ourselves (for example, with art, music and so many other pursuits fueled by purpose and passion); the parts of life that fill us with awe (birth, death, love, the big picture); and our personal power to create our best possible lives while also making the world a better place. Here, you’ll encounter interviews, essays and some episodes created simply for information and fun. I'm your host Kate Jones, welcoming you to Everyday Creation.

Scott Simon's Piano Playing Added an "Extra Dose of Espresso" to Sha Na Na's Performances
Scott Simon joined Sha Na Na in 1970 after responding to an ad for a keyboard player; he stayed with the group until they stopped touring in 2022.
The image in this episode's thumbnail is the cover of the album "Sha Na Na: Woodstock 20 Years After." Simon is pictured at the far left. In the chapters, there's also a photo of Simon signing autographs in 2009.
To watch Simon and the rest of Sha Na Na perform "Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On," go this video. To learn more about the band, visit the official website.
Simon co-wrote the song "Sandy" for "Grease." To listen to John Travolta sing it, as he did in the 1978 movie, you can go here.
This tribute is one of 41 stories that Sheldon Zoldan, a longtime journalist, has written and recorded in honor of the music notables who passed away in 2024. He's written tributes for other years as well. You can listen to the ones from 2023 on Everyday Creation. We'll have the 2022 tributes available later this year.
Sheldon also is the creator of Song of the Day, a story that he sends by email to a list of subscribers. To get on his subscriber list, email shzoldan@comcast.net with the subject line ADD ME TO SOTD.
This is Kate Jones. Thank you for listening to Everyday Creation, available on YouTube and in podcast directories including Apple, Audible, iHeart and Spotify.
Sheldon:
00:00:00.400 --> 00:00:04.100
Screamin' Scott Simon's collegiate dream came true.
00:00:04.880 --> 00:00:06.740
He never had to work for a living.
00:00:07.600 --> 00:00:10.480
His obituary in the New York Times recalled
00:00:10.480 --> 00:00:13.440
an interview he did with the Kansas City
00:00:13.440 --> 00:00:15.140
Star in 1988:
00:00:15.655 --> 00:00:16.955
The idea was
00:00:17.335 --> 00:00:19.495
you would do just what you liked, and
00:00:19.495 --> 00:00:21.755
somehow the money would take care of itself.
00:00:22.695 --> 00:00:25.095
He liked music and spent his life as
00:00:25.095 --> 00:00:27.035
a member of Sha Na Na.
00:00:28.070 --> 00:00:31.670
Simon died from sinus cancer September 5th in
00:00:31.670 --> 00:00:32.650
Ojai, California.
00:00:33.670 --> 00:00:35.210
He was 75.
00:00:36.230 --> 00:00:38.070
The Song of the Day is paying tribute
00:00:38.070 --> 00:00:41.190
to the musicians, singers and songwriters who died
00:00:41.190 --> 00:00:42.650
in 2024.
00:00:44.205 --> 00:00:47.645
Simon studied music and modern English literature at
00:00:47.645 --> 00:00:48.145
Columbia.
00:00:49.005 --> 00:00:52.225
He joined Sha Na Na in 1970
00:00:52.845 --> 00:00:56.045
after answering an ad in the Columbia school
00:00:56.045 --> 00:00:59.185
newspaper for a band needing a keyboard player.
00:01:00.100 --> 00:01:02.660
Sha Na Na played early rock and roll
00:01:02.660 --> 00:01:04.120
songs and doo-wop.
00:01:04.740 --> 00:01:06.820
They played at Woodstock in the summer of
00:01:06.820 --> 00:01:09.620
1969 on the recommendation of Jimi
00:01:09.620 --> 00:01:10.120
Hendrix.
00:01:11.060 --> 00:01:12.280
The music festival's
00:01:12.660 --> 00:01:15.815
documentary and soundtrack turned them into a national
00:01:15.875 --> 00:01:16.375
act.
00:01:16.915 --> 00:01:20.115
"Adding Simon was like adding an extra shot
00:01:20.115 --> 00:01:20.855
of espresso.
00:01:22.115 --> 00:01:24.195
His 'Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On' was
00:01:24.195 --> 00:01:26.215
a savage attack on the piano
00:01:26.530 --> 00:01:29.010
and became one of the most impactful things
00:01:29.010 --> 00:01:29.990
in our performances,"
00:01:30.370 --> 00:01:32.770
band member Donny York told the New York
00:01:32.770 --> 00:01:33.270
Times.
00:01:34.050 --> 00:01:36.550
Simon, besides playing a mean piano,
00:01:36.850 --> 00:01:38.630
was the de facto manager.
00:01:39.095 --> 00:01:41.895
He booked the shows, decided on what songs
00:01:41.895 --> 00:01:44.315
to play, and acted as travel agent.
00:01:44.935 --> 00:01:48.235
They announced they would quit touring in 2022.
00:01:49.655 --> 00:01:51.435
Simon also wrote songs.
00:01:51.895 --> 00:01:53.835
His best known is "Sandy,"
00:01:54.500 --> 00:01:56.980
which he and Louis St. Louis wrote for
00:01:56.980 --> 00:01:58.040
the movie "Grease."
00:01:58.900 --> 00:02:00.760
John Travolta sang it.
00:02:01.220 --> 00:02:03.700
The song never was released as a single
00:02:03.700 --> 00:02:06.260
in the U.S. but reached number one in
00:02:06.260 --> 00:02:08.440
Ireland and number two in England.
Kate:
00:02:08.755 --> 00:02:11.335
That was Song of the Day creator Sheldon
00:02:11.475 --> 00:02:14.675
Zoldan. And I'm Kate Jones, host of Everyday
00:02:14.675 --> 00:02:15.175
Creation.
00:02:15.795 --> 00:02:18.055
Thank you for joining us today.
