Everyday Creation
Everyday Creation is about purpose, awe and good vibrations. The show's title refers to three types of creation: The ways we express ourselves (for example, with art, music and so many other pursuits fueled by purpose and passion); the parts of life that fill us with awe (birth, death, love, the big picture); and our personal power to create our best possible lives while also making the world a better place. Here, you’ll encounter interviews, essays and some episodes created simply for information and fun. I'm your host Kate Jones, welcoming you to Everyday Creation.
Everyday Creation
Duke Fakir and the Rest of the Four Tops were the #1 Male Motown Act in England and #2 in the U.S.
Duke Fakir and his friends, Levi Stubbs, Obie Benson and Lawrence Payton, formed the Four Tops in Detroit. They became one of the biggest acts of the 1960s.
"Reach Out I'll Be There" was their second #1 hit on the Billboard chart and the second Motown hit to top the UK charts. Go here to watch them performing the song on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1966.
The public domain photo of Fakir in this episode's thumbnail was taken by Jay Godwin at the LBJ Presidential Library in 2019. It's available on Wikimedia Commons. In the chapters, there's also an image of the album "The Best of Four Tops: 20th Century Masters The Millennium Collection," available in audio CD and on Amazon Music.
Fakir was the last surviving member of the group. His 2022 book, "I'll Be There: My Life with the Four Tops," was co-written with Kathleen McGhee-Anderson. It's also available on Amazon.
This tribute is one of 41 stories that Sheldon Zoldan, a longtime journalist, has written and recorded in honor of the music notables who passed away in 2024. He's written tributes for other years as well. You can listen to the ones from 2023 on Everyday Creation. We'll have the 2022 tributes available later this year.
Sheldon also is the creator of Song of the Day, a story that he sends by email to a list of subscribers. To get on his subscriber list, email shzoldan@comcast.net with the subject line ADD ME TO SOTD.
This is Kate Jones. Thank you for listening to Everyday Creation, available on YouTube and in podcast directories including Apple, Audible, iHeart and Spotify.
Sheldon:
00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:02.480
Duke Fakir made the right decision when he
00:00:02.480 --> 00:00:05.120
decided to skip college and concentrate on his
00:00:05.120 --> 00:00:05.620
music.
00:00:06.240 --> 00:00:08.960
Fakir and three of his Detroit buddies formed
00:00:08.960 --> 00:00:11.360
the Four Tops, one of the biggest acts
00:00:11.360 --> 00:00:12.740
of the 1960s.
00:00:13.295 --> 00:00:16.415
Fakir died July 22 in Detroit of heart
00:00:16.415 --> 00:00:18.355
failure. He was 88.
00:00:18.895 --> 00:00:20.835
The Song of the Day is paying tribute
00:00:20.895 --> 00:00:23.855
to the singers, songwriters and musicians who died
00:00:23.855 --> 00:00:25.315
in 2024.
00:00:26.170 --> 00:00:29.450
Fakir met fellow Four Top Levi Stubbs at
00:00:29.450 --> 00:00:30.670
Pershing High School.
00:00:31.210 --> 00:00:34.170
Obie Benson and Lawrence Payton joined them in
00:00:34.170 --> 00:00:35.550
1954.
00:00:36.170 --> 00:00:39.050
The foursome stayed together until Payton's death in
00:00:39.050 --> 00:00:40.430
1997.
00:00:41.565 --> 00:00:43.565
Benson died in February 2005
00:00:43.565 --> 00:00:45.905
and Stubbs in February 2008.
00:00:46.525 --> 00:00:47.985
Fakir hired replacements
00:00:48.365 --> 00:00:52.465
after each death. He didn't retire until 2023.
00:00:53.530 --> 00:00:56.590
The group avoided disaster in 1988.
00:00:57.210 --> 00:00:59.530
They were scheduled to return to the U.S.
00:00:59.530 --> 00:01:02.330
on Pan Am Flight 103 but
00:01:02.330 --> 00:01:04.970
missed it because a show taping ran long
00:01:04.970 --> 00:01:05.950
or they overslept.
00:01:06.490 --> 00:01:08.430
It's been reported both ways.
00:01:08.815 --> 00:01:11.055
A terrorist bomb blew the plane out of
00:01:11.055 --> 00:01:13.395
the sky, killing everyone aboard.
00:01:14.255 --> 00:01:17.855
Fakir's decision to skip college didn't initially pay
00:01:17.855 --> 00:01:18.355
off.
00:01:18.735 --> 00:01:21.375
The Four Tops didn't have success until they
00:01:21.375 --> 00:01:24.435
joined Motown in 1962.
00:01:24.950 --> 00:01:26.810
They trailed only the Temptations
00:01:27.190 --> 00:01:30.150
as Motown's most successful male group of the
00:01:30.150 --> 00:01:31.130
1960s.
00:01:31.750 --> 00:01:34.230
They were the number one male Motown act
00:01:34.230 --> 00:01:34.970
in England.
00:01:36.550 --> 00:01:38.870
"Reach Out I'll Be There" was the Four
00:01:38.870 --> 00:01:41.475
Tops' second number one Billboard single.
00:01:41.775 --> 00:01:44.255
It was the second Motown hit to reach
00:01:44.255 --> 00:01:45.475
number one in England.
00:01:46.095 --> 00:01:49.455
Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier and Brian Holland wrote
00:01:49.455 --> 00:01:49.955
it.
00:01:50.335 --> 00:01:52.415
They came up with the idea while talking
00:01:52.415 --> 00:01:54.915
about what women like about men.
00:01:55.350 --> 00:01:57.270
They said women want their men to be
00:01:57.270 --> 00:01:58.730
there in times of need.
Kate:
00:02:03.910 --> 00:02:06.650
That was Song of the Day creator Sheldon
00:02:06.710 --> 00:02:08.773
Zoldan. And I'm Kate Jones,
00:02:09.073 --> 00:02:10.613
host of Everyday Creation.
00:02:11.473 --> 00:02:13.653
Thank you for joining us today.
