Shangri-Las' Lead Singer Mary Weiss Led the Way on "Leader of the Pack"

Kate Jones Season 2 Episode 76

Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the Shangri-Las, achieved fame at 15 with the hit song "Leader of the Pack." Her personal life wasn't easy, though, and she put a lot of her own emotions into the song.

The Shangri-Las had their very first hit in 1964 with "Remember (Walking in the Sand)." Weiss was 14 at the time. By 1968, the group had disbanded amid legal disputes.

The photo of Weiss accompanying this episode was cropped from a group publicity shot taken in 1964 and distributed by Red Bird Records. It's available on Wikipedia.

If you want to hear "Leader of the Pack," you can find a version on YouTube.

Tribute excerpt:
00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:00.660
"Weiss,

00:00:01.360 --> 00:00:03.780
her older sister, and two friends

00:00:04.160 --> 00:00:07.300
started the Shangri-Las when she was 14.

00:00:08.240 --> 00:00:12.160
Music producer George Shadow Morton hired them to

00:00:12.160 --> 00:00:14.420
record a demo of his song 'Remember,

00:00:15.015 --> 00:00:16.235
(Walking in the Sand).'

00:00:16.855 --> 00:00:18.715
The demo turned into a hit."

Kate:
00:00:19.895 --> 00:00:21.355
That's just a snippet

00:00:21.815 --> 00:00:24.795
of Sheldon Zoldan's tribute to Mary Weiss,

00:00:25.255 --> 00:00:26.795
who died in January

00:00:27.095 --> 00:00:27.595
2024.

00:00:28.800 --> 00:00:29.540
For more,

00:00:30.160 --> 00:00:31.780
here's the whole story.

Sheldon:
00:00:33.200 --> 00:00:35.440
Mary Weiss had a number one hit when

00:00:35.440 --> 00:00:38.160
she was 15 years old, but she said

00:00:38.160 --> 00:00:40.020
her teenage years were difficult,

00:00:40.655 --> 00:00:44.015
filled with emotional pain when recording hit songs

00:00:44.015 --> 00:00:45.475
with the Shangri-Las.

00:00:46.335 --> 00:00:50.275
Weiss died January 19th in Palm Springs, California,

00:00:51.055 --> 00:00:52.435
of chronic obstructive

00:00:52.815 --> 00:00:54.115
pulmonary disease.

00:00:54.600 --> 00:00:55.740
She was 75.

00:00:56.280 --> 00:00:58.360
Song of the Day is paying tribute to

00:00:58.360 --> 00:01:00.700
the singers, songwriters, and musicians

00:01:01.160 --> 00:01:02.700
who died in 2024.

00:01:04.360 --> 00:01:06.680
Weiss was only 6 weeks old when her

00:01:06.680 --> 00:01:07.580
father died.

00:01:07.915 --> 00:01:10.975
Her family survived on welfare after that.

00:01:11.355 --> 00:01:11.855
Weiss,

00:01:12.635 --> 00:01:14.975
her older sister, and two friends

00:01:15.355 --> 00:01:18.395
started the Shangri-Las, named after a Long

00:01:18.395 --> 00:01:20.895
Island restaurant, when she was 14.

00:01:21.930 --> 00:01:25.690
Music producer George Shadow Morton hired them to

00:01:25.690 --> 00:01:28.110
record a demo of his song "Remember

00:01:28.570 --> 00:01:29.790
(Walking in the Sand)."

00:01:30.410 --> 00:01:32.270
The demo turned into a hit,

00:01:32.570 --> 00:01:35.710
reaching number 5 on Billboard's Hot 100

00:01:36.875 --> 00:01:37.455
in 1964.

00:01:38.715 --> 00:01:41.995
"Leader of the Pack" followed, reaching number 1

00:01:41.995 --> 00:01:42.655
in November

00:01:43.515 --> 00:01:44.015
1964.

00:01:44.955 --> 00:01:47.135
The group disbanded in 1968.

00:01:48.715 --> 00:01:51.035
"When we started, it was all about the

00:01:51.035 --> 00:01:51.535
music.

00:01:51.930 --> 00:01:54.010
By the time it ended, it was all

00:01:54.010 --> 00:01:54.830
about litigation,"

00:01:55.290 --> 00:01:57.390
Weiss told Rolling Stone Magazine

00:01:57.770 --> 00:01:58.350
in 2007.

00:02:00.170 --> 00:02:02.830
Weiss couldn't record again until 1977

00:02:03.690 --> 00:02:04.750
because of lawsuits,

00:02:05.375 --> 00:02:07.615
but the group hated the album that came

00:02:07.615 --> 00:02:10.035
out so much they never released it.

00:02:10.415 --> 00:02:12.815
Weiss quit the music business to work for

00:02:12.815 --> 00:02:14.675
an interior design firm.

00:02:15.375 --> 00:02:17.695
She returned to music as a solo artist

00:02:17.695 --> 00:02:18.435
in 2007

00:02:19.450 --> 00:02:21.870
and recorded a well-received album.

00:02:22.730 --> 00:02:23.230
Morton,

00:02:23.770 --> 00:02:26.810
Ellie Greenwich, and Jeff Barry wrote "Leader of

00:02:26.810 --> 00:02:27.470
the Pack."

00:02:28.010 --> 00:02:30.330
The song is about Betty who's in love

00:02:30.330 --> 00:02:31.230
with a motorcycle

00:02:31.530 --> 00:02:32.750
gang leader, Jimmy.

00:02:33.275 --> 00:02:35.375
Her father makes her end the relationship,

00:02:35.755 --> 00:02:38.735
and when she tells Jimmy, he speeds off

00:02:39.035 --> 00:02:40.895
crashing his bike and dying.

00:02:41.835 --> 00:02:43.355
"I put a lot of my own pain

00:02:43.355 --> 00:02:45.995
in that song. I don't think teenage years

00:02:45.995 --> 00:02:47.675
are all that rosy for a lot of

00:02:47.675 --> 00:02:48.175
people.

00:02:48.580 --> 00:02:50.820
They certainly weren't for me," she said in

00:02:50.820 --> 00:02:51.560
a 2007

00:02:52.180 --> 00:02:53.480
interview with The Telegraph.
