Everyday Creation

Tribute to Denny Laine, featuring Sheldon Zoldan

Kate Jones Season 1 Episode 52

Denny Laine helped form the Moody Blues and was the lead singer on their first hit, "Go Now," in 1964. Then, in 1971, he helped put together Wings, Paul McCartney’s first band after the Beatles broke up, and was with the group until it disbanded 10 years later.

This tribute to Laine is one of 44 short biographies of significant figures in the music industry who passed away in 2023.

Laine co-wrote “Mull of Kintyre” with McCartney in the early 1970s, but they didn’t record it until 1977. The single became Wings’ biggest hit in England. It sold more than 2 million copies and is the fourth best-selling single of all time in Great Britain.

You can watch Laine and McCartney singing the song with Linda McCartney in this video. Enjoy the beautiful scenery, the marching bagpipers, and the townspeople joining in on the fun.

The song was released around Christmas and remains a popular song to play around the holidays. Laine talks about it in this video.

And in this video, he sings "Go Now."

In this episode's chapters, you'll see an image of the cover of the Audible Audiobook "In Conversation with Denny Laine" by Geoffrey Giuliano. He and Laine wrote a book together on Paul McCartney in the 1990s.

Also in the chapters, you can go right to the tribute by skipping my intro; feel free to skip my closing remarks too. Both are there to provide context for those who haven't listened to the other tributes.

This is Kate Jones. Thank you for listening to Everyday Creation, available on YouTube and in podcast directories including Apple, Spotify and Audible.

Kate:
00:00:00.320 --> 00:00:03.120
Hello, and welcome to Everyday Creation. This is

00:00:03.120 --> 00:00:06.500
your host, Kate Jones, with one of 44

00:00:07.255 --> 00:00:07.755
tributes

00:00:08.135 --> 00:00:10.475
to significant figures in the music industry

00:00:10.855 --> 00:00:12.955
who passed away in 2023.

00:00:14.215 --> 00:00:15.915
My guest Sheldon Zoldan,

00:00:16.340 --> 00:00:18.600
a longtime writer and newspaper editor,

00:00:19.060 --> 00:00:20.520
wrote these short biographies

00:00:20.900 --> 00:00:22.040
and recorded them.

00:00:22.740 --> 00:00:24.840
Each one is an intriguing

00:00:25.485 --> 00:00:28.765
glimpse into the life and impact of someone

00:00:28.765 --> 00:00:29.665
who contributed

00:00:30.045 --> 00:00:32.845
to the soundtracks of our lives. Here's what

00:00:32.845 --> 00:00:34.705
Sheldon has to say in this tribute.

Sheldon:
00:00:36.030 --> 00:00:39.070
Denny Laine co-founded the Moody Blues but

00:00:39.070 --> 00:00:41.150
left before it became one of the most

00:00:41.150 --> 00:00:43.970
successful bands of the early rock era.

00:00:44.395 --> 00:00:46.655
He didn't make the same mistake twice.

00:00:47.115 --> 00:00:48.975
He helped put together Wings,

00:00:49.435 --> 00:00:52.875
Paul McCartney's first band after the Beatles broke

00:00:52.875 --> 00:00:54.350
up, in 1971.

00:00:55.530 --> 00:00:58.570
He never left until the group disbanded 10

00:00:58.570 --> 00:00:59.390
years later.

00:01:00.250 --> 00:01:02.190
He was Watson to McCartney's

00:01:02.570 --> 00:01:03.855
Sherlock Holmes.

00:01:04.635 --> 00:01:08.395
Laine died December 5th in Naples, Florida, from

00:01:08.395 --> 00:01:08.895
interstitial

00:01:09.355 --> 00:01:10.335
lung disease.

00:01:10.635 --> 00:01:11.695
He was 79.

00:01:13.420 --> 00:01:17.200
He changed his name from Brian Frederick Hines

00:01:17.260 --> 00:01:20.060
to Denny Laine because it sounded more like

00:01:20.060 --> 00:01:21.120
a rock musician.

00:01:22.195 --> 00:01:25.495
Laine came from his sister's favorite singer, Frankie

00:01:25.635 --> 00:01:26.135
Laine.

00:01:27.075 --> 00:01:29.235
He helped form the Moody Blues when he

00:01:29.235 --> 00:01:29.975
was 20.

00:01:30.730 --> 00:01:32.730
Laine was the lead singer of their first

00:01:32.730 --> 00:01:33.950
hit, "Go Now,"

00:01:34.250 --> 00:01:35.070
in 1964.

00:01:36.570 --> 00:01:37.870
He left in 1966

00:01:38.970 --> 00:01:41.975
after the band moved in a different direction.

00:01:43.315 --> 00:01:45.715
He bounced around as a solo artist and

00:01:45.715 --> 00:01:48.855
in a few forgettable bands before joining Wings.

00:01:50.020 --> 00:01:51.940
Laine did a little bit of everything with

00:01:51.940 --> 00:01:53.400
the band. Sometimes,

00:01:54.180 --> 00:01:57.540
Wings became a trio. Only Paul, Linda and

00:01:57.540 --> 00:01:58.680
Laine recorded

00:01:59.055 --> 00:02:01.315
the "Band on the Run" album in Lagos,

00:02:01.375 --> 00:02:01.875
Nigeria,

00:02:02.735 --> 00:02:03.475
as musicians

00:02:03.855 --> 00:02:04.835
came and went.

00:02:05.375 --> 00:02:06.595
He quit in 1981

00:02:07.215 --> 00:02:08.750
after McCartney stopped

00:02:10.910 --> 00:02:13.890
touring. Laine co-wrote "Mull of Kintyre"

00:02:14.190 --> 00:02:16.610
with McCartney in the early 1970s,

00:02:17.405 --> 00:02:18.865
but they didn't record

00:02:19.565 --> 00:02:20.865
it until 1977.

00:02:22.685 --> 00:02:24.865
The song is about the area of Scotland

00:02:25.350 --> 00:02:27.050
where McCartney had a farm.

00:02:27.830 --> 00:02:29.450
The single became Wings'

00:02:29.830 --> 00:02:31.990
biggest hit in England. It sold more than

00:02:31.990 --> 00:02:33.210
2 million copies

00:02:33.725 --> 00:02:36.525
and is the fourth best-selling single of

00:02:36.525 --> 00:02:38.305
all time in Great Britain.

00:02:39.085 --> 00:02:42.370
The song was released around Christmas and remains

00:02:42.430 --> 00:02:45.010
a popular song to play around the holidays.

song that Sheldon referenced.
