Everyday Creation
Everyday Creation is about living our purpose, lifting our vibes, and expressing our creativity for the highest good. The show's title refers to three types of creation: The ways we express ourselves (for example, with art, music and so many other pursuits fueled by purpose and passion); the parts of life that fill us with awe — birth, death, love, the big picture; and our innate personal power to create our best possible lives while also making the world a better place. You’ll hear conversations with terrific guests on matters we care about, as well as spiritual perspectives, personal essays on being our best selves, and episodes simply for information and fun. I'm your host Kate Jones, welcoming you to Everyday Creation.
Everyday Creation
Tribute to Steve Harwell, featuring Sheldon Zoldan
Steve Harwell, frontman and co-founder of Smash Mouth, retired in 2021 from the group because of ongoing health issues. He was only 56 when he died.
The group is best known for “All Star,” written by guitarist Greg Camp who said it was for fans who sent in letters telling the band how they were being bullied. In this official video, you can watch Harwell and his fellow Smash Mouth members performing the song.
The image in the chapters is from a 2013 cookbook, "Smash Mouth: Recipes from the Road," by Harwell, fellow band member Paul DeLisle, and Robert Hayes. I found a paperback version on Amazon.
Also in the chapters, you can go right to the tribute by skipping my intro; feel free to skip my closing remarks too. Both are there to provide context for those who haven't listened to the other tributes.
Throughout much of his life, Harwell struggled with alcoholism, which was exacerbated by the 2001 death of his 6-month-old son, Presley. Harwell established a disease prevention fund, the Presley Scott Research Foundation for Leukemia, in his child's honor.
This tribute is one of 44 episodes dedicated to significant figures in the music industry who passed away in 2023. All were written and recorded by longtime writer/editor Sheldon Zoldan, who also writes Song of the Day, a music-related story sent daily to an email list of subscribers. To get on his subscriber list, email shzoldan@comcast.net with the subject line ADD ME TO SOTD.
Audio engineer/musician Mike Villegas edited all the audio for this series. Hope you enjoy these intriguing glimpses into the lives of the people who made some of the music we love.
This is Kate Jones. Thank you for listening to Everyday Creation, available on YouTube and in podcast directories including Apple, Spotify and Audible.
Kate:
00:00:00.320 --> 00:00:03.120
Hello, and welcome to Everyday Creation. This is
00:00:03.120 --> 00:00:06.500
your host, Kate Jones, with one of 44
00:00:07.255 --> 00:00:07.755
tributes
00:00:08.135 --> 00:00:10.475
to significant figures in the music industry
00:00:10.855 --> 00:00:12.955
who passed away in 2023.
00:00:14.215 --> 00:00:15.915
My guest Sheldon Zoldan,
00:00:16.340 --> 00:00:18.600
a longtime writer and newspaper editor,
00:00:19.060 --> 00:00:20.520
wrote these short biographies
00:00:20.900 --> 00:00:22.040
and recorded them.
00:00:22.740 --> 00:00:24.840
Each one is an intriguing
00:00:25.485 --> 00:00:28.685
glimpse into the life and impact of someone
00:00:28.685 --> 00:00:29.665
who contributed
00:00:30.045 --> 00:00:32.845
to the soundtracks of our lives. Here's what
00:00:32.845 --> 00:00:34.705
Sheldon has to say in this tribute.
Sheldon:
00:00:36.190 --> 00:00:40.290
Steve Harwell's legacy was tarnished with alcohol-fueled
00:00:40.350 --> 00:00:40.850
outbursts
00:00:41.310 --> 00:00:42.850
and hate-filled rants
00:00:43.365 --> 00:00:45.225
during the final years of his life.
00:00:45.845 --> 00:00:48.665
The events forced him to retire as frontman
00:00:48.885 --> 00:00:51.865
for Smash Mouth, the group he co-founded.
00:00:52.430 --> 00:00:55.870
Harwell died September 4th in Boise, Idaho, from
00:00:55.870 --> 00:00:56.690
liver failure.
00:00:57.470 --> 00:00:58.530
He was 56.
00:00:59.695 --> 00:01:00.195
Harwell
00:01:00.655 --> 00:01:03.395
began as a rapper in the group F.O.S.
00:01:04.095 --> 00:01:07.795
but changed course and co-founded Smash Mouth in 1994.
00:01:09.040 --> 00:01:10.980
The group had a hit in 1997
00:01:11.760 --> 00:01:13.220
with "Walkin' on the Sun,"
00:01:13.680 --> 00:01:15.920
but it was "All Star" from their second
00:01:15.920 --> 00:01:17.940
album that brought them immortality.
00:01:19.295 --> 00:01:19.795
Guitarist
00:01:20.095 --> 00:01:23.055
Greg Camp wrote it after record executives said
00:01:23.055 --> 00:01:24.815
they needed a song that would be a
00:01:24.815 --> 00:01:25.635
good single.
00:01:26.700 --> 00:01:28.860
Camp wrote it for fans who sent in
00:01:28.860 --> 00:01:31.500
letters telling the band how they were being
00:01:31.500 --> 00:01:32.000
bullied.
00:01:32.620 --> 00:01:34.995
It reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot
00:01:34.995 --> 00:01:36.535
100 in 1999.
00:01:37.795 --> 00:01:40.195
It became more famous when it was played
00:01:40.195 --> 00:01:42.215
over the opening credits of "Shrek"
00:01:42.650 --> 00:01:43.310
in 2001.
00:01:45.210 --> 00:01:48.010
The band put out more albums during the
00:01:48.010 --> 00:01:48.510
2000s
00:01:49.290 --> 00:01:51.150
but not with the same success.
00:01:51.985 --> 00:01:52.485
Meanwhile,
00:01:52.945 --> 00:01:55.445
Harwell's life began to spin out of control.
00:01:56.145 --> 00:01:58.645
His 6-month-old son died in 2001.
00:01:59.850 --> 00:02:01.150
He battled alcoholism
00:02:01.690 --> 00:02:02.590
and, in 2013.
00:02:03.450 --> 00:02:06.110
was diagnosed with serious heart problems
00:02:06.795 --> 00:02:07.695
and Wernicke
00:02:08.155 --> 00:02:08.655
encephalopathy,
00:02:10.155 --> 00:02:12.255
which affects memory and speech.
00:02:13.435 --> 00:02:15.295
He became erratic during concerts,
00:02:15.610 --> 00:02:17.710
sometimes swearing at audience members.
00:02:18.170 --> 00:02:21.130
He collapsed on stage during a concert in
00:02:21.130 --> 00:02:21.630
2016.
00:02:22.985 --> 00:02:25.385
His final outburst came during a show in
00:02:25.385 --> 00:02:27.005
Bethel, New York, in 2021
00:02:27.705 --> 00:02:29.005
when he looked intoxicated,
00:02:29.545 --> 00:02:30.605
slurred his words,
00:02:31.160 --> 00:02:33.560
threatened the audience members, and is said to
00:02:33.560 --> 00:02:35.260
have given the Nazi salute.
00:02:36.280 --> 00:02:40.040
He retired soon after, blaming mental and physical
00:02:40.040 --> 00:02:40.540
issues.
Kate:
00:02:41.835 --> 00:02:43.995
This is Kate again. Please go to the
00:02:43.995 --> 00:02:46.475
description for more information and to hear the
00:02:46.475 --> 00:02:47.855
song that Sheldon referenced.
00:02:48.315 --> 00:02:50.630
If you enjoyed this tribute, please check out
00:02:50.630 --> 00:02:52.550
the rest of them. Although some of the
00:02:52.550 --> 00:02:55.190
names are not as familiar as others, the
00:02:55.190 --> 00:02:55.690
biographies
00:02:56.230 --> 00:02:57.770
are equally intriguing.
00:02:58.765 --> 00:03:01.265
Thank you for listening to Everyday Creation.
00:03:01.805 --> 00:03:04.125

00:03:04.125 --> 00:03:04.615
enjoy it.
