Tribute to David Jolicoeur, featuring Sheldon Zoldan
Apr 24, 2024 Season 1 Episode 16
Kate Jones

Writer/editor Sheldon Zoldan pays tribute to David Jolicoeur, co-creator of the colorful rap trio De La Soul. This is one of 44 short yet illuminating episodes about significant figures in the music industry who passed away in 2023.

In addition to these tributes, Sheldon writes Song of the Day, a music-related story sent daily to an email list of subscribers. To get on his Song of the Day list, email shzoldan@comcast.net with the subject line ADD ME TO SOTD.

To listen to De La Soul's most successful song, “Me Myself and I,”  visit YouTube. If you like it, check out the entire album. Here's a link to it on vinyl. Or go to chapters to see the cheerful cover design.

The tributes in this series are fascinating glimpses into the lives and impact of those who made the soundtracks of our lives. Although some of Sheldon's subjects are less famous than others, you may find that their songs and stories are equally worth your time. I sure did.

Audio engineer Mike Villegas (who’s also a musician) and I will publish all 44 tributes in the coming weeks. Hope you enjoy them.

This is Kate Jones. Thank you for listening to the show!

Available on Apple, Spotify, Audible and in other directories, and on YouTube.

Kate:
00:00:22.220 --> 00:00:24.400
Hello, and welcome to Everyday Creation,

00:00:24.755 --> 00:00:27.315
a show about living our purpose and lifting

00:00:27.315 --> 00:00:30.055
our vibes for ourselves and the world.

00:00:30.515 --> 00:00:33.410
I'm Kate Jones here with a tribute to

00:00:33.410 --> 00:00:34.470
David Jolicoeur,

00:00:35.410 --> 00:00:35.910
co-creator

00:00:36.290 --> 00:00:38.150
of the colorful rap trio

00:00:38.530 --> 00:00:39.510
De La Soul.

00:00:40.175 --> 00:00:41.475
This is one of 44

00:00:41.855 --> 00:00:43.475
short yet illuminating

00:00:43.935 --> 00:00:44.435
episodes

00:00:44.975 --> 00:00:47.555
about significant figures in the music industry

00:00:48.060 --> 00:00:49.760
who passed away in 2023.

00:00:51.020 --> 00:00:54.300
My guest Sheldon Zoldan, a longtime writer and

00:00:54.300 --> 00:00:55.280
newspaper editor,

00:00:55.660 --> 00:00:57.805
wrote these tributes and recorded them.

00:00:58.285 --> 00:01:00.605
Here's what he says about Jolicoeur, who

00:01:00.605 --> 00:01:03.425
died on February 12th last year.

Sheldon:
00:01:04.125 --> 00:01:06.465
The obit for David Jolicoeur

00:01:06.880 --> 00:01:08.880
was as much an obit about the hip

00:01:08.880 --> 00:01:10.660
hop group he helped create,

00:01:11.200 --> 00:01:12.100
De La Soul.

00:01:12.720 --> 00:01:15.360
The publicist for the group confirmed his death

00:01:15.360 --> 00:01:16.660
on February 12th

00:01:17.025 --> 00:01:19.445
but didn't say when or how he died.

00:01:19.985 --> 00:01:22.545
Jolicoeur talked in recent years about his

00:01:22.545 --> 00:01:24.645
battle with congestive heart failure.

00:01:25.570 --> 00:01:26.390
He was 54.

00:01:28.450 --> 00:01:29.270
Jolicoeur

00:01:29.810 --> 00:01:32.450
and two high school friends created the rap

00:01:32.450 --> 00:01:32.950
trio.

00:01:33.425 --> 00:01:36.245
He took on the name Trugoy the Dove.

00:01:36.625 --> 00:01:38.965
Trugoy was yogurt spelled backwards

00:01:39.745 --> 00:01:41.205
and his favorite food.

00:01:41.580 --> 00:01:43.760
He was also known as Plug

00:01:44.220 --> 00:01:45.120
and Dave.

00:01:45.660 --> 00:01:48.320
The trio was unlike most of the rappers

00:01:48.380 --> 00:01:49.120
at the time.

00:01:49.465 --> 00:01:52.505
They wore colorful flowered shirts and their songs

00:01:52.505 --> 00:01:54.125
were whimsical and positive,

00:01:54.745 --> 00:01:56.845
unlike the rap of NWA

00:01:57.385 --> 00:01:58.605
and Public Enemy,

00:01:59.390 --> 00:02:01.250
They were an immediate success.

00:02:01.550 --> 00:02:02.770
Their first album,

00:02:03.390 --> 00:02:05.250
"3 Feet High And Rising,"

00:02:05.870 --> 00:02:07.090
came out in 1989

00:02:07.470 --> 00:02:09.125
and reached number 24

00:02:09.505 --> 00:02:12.005
on Billboard's 200 album chart.

00:02:13.105 --> 00:02:15.265
Our song of the day, "Me, Myself and

00:02:15.265 --> 00:02:17.845
I" was a single from that album.

00:02:18.370 --> 00:02:20.150
It was the trio's most

00:02:20.450 --> 00:02:21.670
successful single.

00:02:22.130 --> 00:02:23.750
It reached number 1 on Billboard's

00:02:24.130 --> 00:02:27.555
R & B chart and 34 on Billboard's

00:02:27.695 --> 00:02:29.795
Hot 100 singles chart.

00:02:30.655 --> 00:02:32.675
De La Soul never recreated

00:02:33.055 --> 00:02:34.195
their early success,

00:02:35.090 --> 00:02:36.950
partly because of legal issues.

00:02:37.570 --> 00:02:39.990
The group would use samplings in their songs,

00:02:40.050 --> 00:02:41.670
snippets from other recordings.

00:02:42.165 --> 00:02:44.645
The group the Turtles filed a lawsuit against

00:02:44.645 --> 00:02:46.345
them and settled out of court.

00:02:47.045 --> 00:02:49.785
Their music was hard to find because streaming

00:02:49.845 --> 00:02:52.550
services wouldn't make it available because of the

00:02:52.550 --> 00:02:53.610
copyright issues.

00:02:54.230 --> 00:02:57.110
The trio finally reached a settlement where their

00:02:57.110 --> 00:02:59.690
catalog would start streaming March 3rd,

00:03:00.415 --> 00:03:01.875
a month after Jolicoeur's

00:03:02.415 --> 00:03:02.915
death.

Kate:
00:03:04.015 --> 00:03:05.075
This is Kate again.

00:03:05.695 --> 00:03:08.270
Sheldon also writes Song of the Day, a

00:03:08.270 --> 00:03:11.070
music-related story sent daily to an email

00:03:11.070 --> 00:03:12.050
list of subscribers.

00:03:12.910 --> 00:03:15.570
All of those stories and these tributes

00:03:15.955 --> 00:03:17.975
include links to the featured songs.

00:03:18.755 --> 00:03:20.375
In this episode's description,

00:03:20.835 --> 00:03:23.255
you can link to the trio's most successful

00:03:23.395 --> 00:03:23.895
song,

00:03:24.300 --> 00:03:26.480
"Me, Myself, and I" on YouTube,

00:03:26.940 --> 00:03:28.400
as well as get information

00:03:28.700 --> 00:03:31.280
on how to join Sheldon's subscriber list.

00:03:31.995 --> 00:03:33.455
If you enjoyed this tribute,

00:03:33.915 --> 00:03:36.655
please check out the next one about rockin'

00:03:36.715 --> 00:03:38.335

00:03:38.635 --> 00:03:41.210
and share the tributes with anyone who might

00:03:41.370 --> 00:03:43.950
appreciate these well-researched glimpses

00:03:44.410 --> 00:03:46.830
into the lives of the talented people

00:03:47.130 --> 00:03:49.390
who created some of the music we love.

00:03:50.005 --> 00:03:52.825
Thank you for listening to Everyday Creation.
