Barrett Strong wrote hit songs for such Motown artists as the Temptations, Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye. As a performing artist, he had only one hit: "Money, That's What I Want," which is the featured song in this tribute. The Beatles covered it early in their career.

This is one of 44 short yet illuminating episodes about significant figures in the music industry who passed away in 2023. My guest Sheldon Zoldan, a longtime writer and newspaper editor, wrote these tributes and recorded them.

To hear "Money, That's What I Want," please go to YouTube. Strong may not be a household name, but take a look at the comments below the video. They're wonderful, and they really speak to Strong's impact on listeners' lives.

Sheldon also writes Song of the Day, a music-related story sent daily to an email list of subscribers. To get on the Song of the Day subscriber list, email shzoldan@comcast.net with the subject line ADD ME TO SOTD.

Kate:
00:00:22.140 --> 00:00:24.880
Hello, and welcome to Everyday Creation,

00:00:25.455 --> 00:00:28.095
a show about living our purpose and lifting

00:00:28.095 --> 00:00:29.715
our vibes for ourselves

00:00:30.095 --> 00:00:30.915
and the world.

00:00:31.455 --> 00:00:34.175
I'm Kate Jones here with a tribute to

00:00:34.175 --> 00:00:35.155
Barrett Strong,

00:00:35.770 --> 00:00:39.050
a writer of songs that other performers turned

00:00:39.050 --> 00:00:39.950
into classics.

00:00:40.730 --> 00:00:43.950
This is one of 44 short yet illuminating

00:00:44.410 --> 00:00:44.910
episodes

00:00:45.485 --> 00:00:48.605
about significant figures in the music industry who

00:00:48.605 --> 00:00:50.225
passed away in 2023.

00:00:51.885 --> 00:00:53.505
My guest Sheldon Zoldan,

00:00:53.870 --> 00:00:56.130
a longtime writer and newspaper editor,

00:00:56.670 --> 00:00:59.790
wrote these tributes and recorded them. Here's what

00:00:59.790 --> 00:01:02.930
he says about Strong, who died on January

00:01:02.990 --> 00:01:03.490
28th

00:01:03.825 --> 00:01:04.725
of last year.

Sheldon:
00:01:05.585 --> 00:01:08.065
Barrett Strong had one hit as a singer,

00:01:08.065 --> 00:01:10.625
but he didn't care. He was happy writing

00:01:10.625 --> 00:01:13.045
songs that others turned into classics.

00:01:13.890 --> 00:01:17.510
Barrett, along with his writing partner, Norman Whitfield,

00:01:17.570 --> 00:01:19.670
wrote "I Heard it Through the Grapevine,"

00:01:20.130 --> 00:01:21.990
"War," "Ball of Confusion,"

00:01:22.445 --> 00:01:23.585
"I Wish it Would Rain,"

00:01:24.045 --> 00:01:25.665
"Papa was a Rolling Stone"

00:01:26.125 --> 00:01:27.505
and "Just My Imagination"

00:01:28.045 --> 00:01:32.090
for Motown artists The Temptations, Smokey Robinson and

00:01:32.090 --> 00:01:33.070
Marvin Gaye.

00:01:33.930 --> 00:01:36.110
Strong died January 28th

00:01:36.490 --> 00:01:37.950
in San Diego, California.

00:01:38.765 --> 00:01:39.505
He was

00:01:40.485 --> 00:01:40.985
81.

00:01:41.965 --> 00:01:44.765
Strong started singing and playing the piano in

00:01:44.765 --> 00:01:46.225
Detroit with his sisters.

00:01:46.800 --> 00:01:49.040
He had just turned 20 when he signed

00:01:49.040 --> 00:01:50.420
on with Barry Gordy,

00:01:50.720 --> 00:01:52.500
who had just started Motown.

00:01:53.280 --> 00:01:54.740
The Song of the Day,

00:01:55.120 --> 00:01:55.620
"Money

00:01:55.965 --> 00:01:59.245
(That's What I Want," became Motown's first hit

00:01:59.245 --> 00:02:01.025
record, a million-seller

00:02:01.565 --> 00:02:03.345
reaching Number 2 on Billboard's

00:02:03.645 --> 00:02:04.865
R&B chart

00:02:05.310 --> 00:02:06.050
and 23

00:02:06.510 --> 00:02:08.530
on the Hot 100 in 1960.

00:02:09.470 --> 00:02:12.030
It also gave Gordy the money he needed to

00:02:12.030 --> 00:02:13.170
expand Motown.

00:02:14.645 --> 00:02:16.965
Strong said when he wrote the song, he created

00:02:16.965 --> 00:02:19.865
the piano opening while riffing to Ray Charles'

00:02:20.325 --> 00:02:21.305
"What I Say."

00:02:21.890 --> 00:02:23.890
What he didn't know was his name was

00:02:23.890 --> 00:02:25.750
removed from the writing credits.

00:02:26.290 --> 00:02:29.730
Gordy claims Strong's name originally was on the

00:02:29.730 --> 00:02:30.230
copyright

00:02:30.575 --> 00:02:32.275
because of a clerical error.

00:02:33.055 --> 00:02:35.455
"Money" might have been what he wanted, but

00:02:35.455 --> 00:02:38.015
he didn't get it. His name was added

00:02:38.015 --> 00:02:38.915
in 1987

00:02:39.710 --> 00:02:41.890
and then taken off again in 1988.

00:02:43.230 --> 00:02:45.330
The Beatles recorded the song in

00:02:45.630 --> 00:02:48.430
1963, and the Flying Lizards had a hit

00:02:48.430 --> 00:02:50.735
with it in England, where it reached number

00:02:50.735 --> 00:02:52.275
5 on the charts.

Kate:
00:02:53.695 --> 00:02:56.655

All of those stories
