Kate Jones

Writer/editor Sheldon Zoldan is the creator of Song of the Day, a music-related story sent daily to a list of subscribers. In the past couple of years, he's also written and recorded tributes to music industry greats who are no longer with us.

In this episode, we're focusing on rock guitarist Jeff Beck, the first of Sheldon's 44 tributes to artists, songwriters and producers who passed away in 2023. To hear "Beck’s Bolero,” the song referenced in the tribute, go to the YouTube video.

(And to get on Sheldon’s Song of the Day subscriber list, email shzoldan@comcast.net with the subject line ADD ME TO SOTD.)

There are a lot of books about Beck including "Hot Wired Guitar: The Life of Jeff Beck" and "Jeff: The One, Alone." Here's a link to them on Amazon. The picture of him in the chapters is from the cover of "Hot Wired Guitar," written by Martin Power. The book has an overall nearly 5-star rating on Amazon.

The tributes in this series are fascinating glimpses into the lives and impact of those who made the soundtracks of our lives. Although some of Sheldon's subjects are less famous than others, you may find that their songs and stories are equally worth your time. I sure did.

Audio engineer Mike Villegas (who’s also a musician) and I will publish all 44 tributes in the coming days or weeks. Hope you enjoy them.

This is Kate Jones. Thank you for listening to the show!

Available on Apple, Spotify, Audible and in other directories, and on YouTube.

Kate:
00:00:22.380 --> 00:00:24.960
Hello, and welcome to Everyday Creation,

00:00:25.625 --> 00:00:28.425
a show about living our purpose and lifting

00:00:28.425 --> 00:00:31.325
our vibes for ourselves and the world.

00:00:31.785 --> 00:00:34.505
I'm Kate Jones, here with a tribute to

00:00:34.505 --> 00:00:37.810
the late, great rock guitarist Jeff Beck.

00:00:38.190 --> 00:00:41.010
This is the first of 44 short yet

00:00:41.070 --> 00:00:41.570
illuminating

00:00:41.950 --> 00:00:42.450
episodes

00:00:43.055 --> 00:00:46.255
about significant figures in the music industry who

00:00:46.255 --> 00:00:47.875
passed away in 2023.

00:00:49.375 --> 00:00:53.170
My guest, Sheldon Zoldan, a longtime writer and

00:00:53.170 --> 00:00:54.310
newspaper editor,

00:00:54.770 --> 00:00:57.110
wrote these tributes and recorded them.

00:00:57.495 --> 00:00:59.895
Here's what he says about Beck, who died

00:00:59.895 --> 00:01:01.035
on January 10th

00:01:01.415 --> 00:01:02.235
of last year.

Sheldon:
00:01:03.175 --> 00:01:05.335
If there was a Mount Rushmore for rock

00:01:05.335 --> 00:01:05.835
guitarists,

00:01:06.440 --> 00:01:09.100
Jeff Beck's face would be chiseled on it.

00:01:09.400 --> 00:01:11.720
Beck is considered one of the best rock

00:01:11.720 --> 00:01:12.220
guitarists

00:01:12.520 --> 00:01:13.020
ever.

00:01:14.205 --> 00:01:17.165
Beck died in England on January 10th from

00:01:17.165 --> 00:01:18.385
bacterial meningitis.

00:01:19.325 --> 00:01:20.385
He was 78.

00:01:21.870 --> 00:01:23.970
Beck never wrote a number one hit.

00:01:24.430 --> 00:01:26.430
His gift was what he could do with

00:01:26.430 --> 00:01:27.250
his guitar.

00:01:27.870 --> 00:01:31.010
None of his bands lasted long. He replaced

00:01:31.325 --> 00:01:34.065
Eric Clapton in The Yardbirds in 1966

00:01:35.325 --> 00:01:37.505
and played on two of their biggest hits,

00:01:37.965 --> 00:01:39.505
"Shapes of Things to Come"

00:01:39.860 --> 00:01:41.080
and "Heart Full of

00:01:41.620 --> 00:01:44.040
Soul." He left less than two years later.

00:01:44.500 --> 00:01:47.400
He formed the Jeff Beck Group, which included

00:01:47.460 --> 00:01:50.405
Rod Stewart and Ron Wood who went on

00:01:50.405 --> 00:01:51.945
to join the Rolling Stones.

00:01:52.645 --> 00:01:54.985
The group had two successful albums,

00:01:55.525 --> 00:01:56.905
but the band disbanded

00:01:57.205 --> 00:01:58.585
after the second album.

00:01:59.130 --> 00:02:01.370
He put together other bands that came and

00:02:01.370 --> 00:02:04.830
went. He sometimes recorded solo albums.

00:02:05.450 --> 00:02:07.310
The New York Times obituary

00:02:08.035 --> 00:02:10.115
summed up his lack of being a big

00:02:10.115 --> 00:02:13.155
rock star by using his quote from a

00:02:13.155 --> 00:02:13.655
2018

00:02:14.115 --> 00:02:15.735
Rolling Stone interview.

00:02:16.660 --> 00:02:19.080
"I've never made the big time, mercifully,"

00:02:19.540 --> 00:02:22.100
Beck said. "When you look around and see

00:02:22.100 --> 00:02:23.560
who has made it huge,

00:02:24.085 --> 00:02:26.505
it's a really rotten place to be."

00:02:27.285 --> 00:02:30.165
Beck recorded our song of the day, "Beck's

00:02:30.165 --> 00:02:30.665
Bolero,"

00:02:31.270 --> 00:02:32.090
in 1966

00:02:33.350 --> 00:02:34.890
while still with the Yardbirds.

00:02:35.910 --> 00:02:39.405
Jimmy Page, a future Led Zeppelin member, and

00:02:39.405 --> 00:02:40.305
Keith Moon,

00:02:40.605 --> 00:02:42.065
the drummer for The Who,

00:02:42.445 --> 00:02:45.185
played on the song, which had no lyrics.

00:02:45.885 --> 00:02:48.900
It wasn't released until 10 months after Beck

00:02:48.900 --> 00:02:49.720
recorded it.

00:02:50.260 --> 00:02:53.060
The recording reached number 4 in England, but

00:02:53.060 --> 00:02:55.400
it didn't break Billboard's Hot 100

00:02:55.860 --> 00:02:56.840
in the U.S.

00:02:57.445 --> 00:03:00.245
The song ended up on Beck's solo album,

00:03:00.245 --> 00:03:01.865
"Truth," in 1968.

00:03:02.965 --> 00:03:04.905
The album reached number 15

00:03:05.490 --> 00:03:06.390
on the Billboard

00:03:06.690 --> 00:03:07.670
album chart.

Kate:
00:03:09.410 --> 00:03:10.550
This is Kate again.

00:03:11.090 --> 00:03:13.665
Sheldon also writes Song of the Day, a

00:03:13.665 --> 00:03:16.545
music-related story sent daily to an email

00:03:16.545 --> 00:03:17.685
list of subscribers.

00:03:18.385 --> 00:03:20.645
All of those stories and these tributes

00:03:21.025 --> 00:03:23.125
include links to the featured songs.

00:03:23.780 --> 00:03:25.560
In this episode's description,

00:03:25.940 --> 00:03:27.960
you can link to "Beck's Bolero"

00:03:28.340 --> 00:03:29.080
on YouTube,

00:03:29.460 --> 00:03:31.620
as well as get information on how to

00:03:31.620 --> 00:03:32.440
join Sheldon's

00:03:32.885 --> 00:03:33.705
subscriber list.

00:03:34.565 --> 00:03:35.945
If you enjoyed this tribute,

00:03:36.245 --> 00:03:38.245
please check out the next one to Lisa

00:03:38.245 --> 00:03:39.145

and share them both with anyone

00:03:41.560 --> 00:03:44.620
who might appreciate these well-researched glimpses

00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:47.420
into the lives of the talented people

00:03:47.720 --> 00:03:49.980
who created some of the music we love.

00:03:50.665 --> 00:03:53.325
Thank you for listening to Everyday Creation.
