Tribute to Lisa Marie Presley, featuring Sheldon Zoldan
Apr 17, 2024 Season 1 Episode 11
Kate Jones

Writer/editor Sheldon Zoldan is the creator of Song of the Day, a music-related story sent daily to a list of subscribers. In the past couple of years, he's also written and recorded tributes to music industry greats who are no longer with us.

In this episode, we're focusing on Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis and an accomplished singer — and songwriter — in her own right.  This is one of Sheldon's 44 tributes to artists, songwriters and producers who passed away in 2023. To hear "Lights Out,” the song referenced in the tribute, go to the YouTube video.

The public domain photo of Presley in the chapters is from wikimedia. org. You can download a copy here.

And to get on Sheldon’s Song of the Day subscriber list, email shzoldan@comcast.net with the subject line ADD ME TO SOTD.

The tributes in this series are fascinating glimpses into the lives and impact of those who made the soundtracks of our lives. Although some of Sheldon's subjects are less famous than others, you may find that their songs and stories are equally worth your time. I sure did.

Audio engineer Mike Villegas (who’s also a musician) and I will publish the rest of the 44 tributes in the coming days or weeks. Hope you enjoy them.

This is Kate Jones. Thank you for listening to the show!

Available on Apple, Spotify, Audible and in other directories, and on YouTube.

Kate:
00:00:22.300 --> 00:00:24.480
Hello, and welcome to Everyday Creation,

00:00:24.845 --> 00:00:27.085
a show about living our purpose and lifting

00:00:27.085 --> 00:00:29.505
our vibes for ourselves and the world.

00:00:29.885 --> 00:00:32.790
I'm Kate Jones, here with a tribute to

00:00:32.790 --> 00:00:34.170
Lisa Marie Presley,

00:00:34.630 --> 00:00:37.990
daughter of Elvis and an accomplished singer in

00:00:37.990 --> 00:00:38.970
her own right.

00:00:39.350 --> 00:00:41.130
She was a songwriter too.

00:00:41.605 --> 00:00:44.505
This is one of 44 short yet illuminating

00:00:44.805 --> 00:00:45.305
episodes

00:00:45.765 --> 00:00:48.345
about significant figures in the music industry

00:00:48.725 --> 00:00:50.665
who passed away in 2023.

00:00:52.070 --> 00:00:53.850
My guest, Sheldon Zoldan,

00:00:54.310 --> 00:00:56.890
a longtime writer and newspaper editor,

00:00:57.270 --> 00:01:00.095
wrote these tributes and recorded them. Here's what

00:01:00.095 --> 00:01:02.815
he says about Presley who died on January

00:01:02.815 --> 00:01:03.315
12th

00:01:03.695 --> 00:01:04.355
of last year.

Sheldon:
00:01:05.215 --> 00:01:08.115
Lisa Marie Presley had to carry her famous

00:01:08.175 --> 00:01:11.250
last name the way Atlas was condemned to

00:01:11.250 --> 00:01:13.410
hold up the heavens on his shoulders for

00:01:13.410 --> 00:01:13.910
eternity.

00:01:14.690 --> 00:01:17.270
Her christened name wasn't "Lisa Marie Presley,

00:01:18.045 --> 00:01:21.005
the only child of Elvis Presley." It only

00:01:21.005 --> 00:01:22.065
seemed like that.

00:01:22.685 --> 00:01:24.685
She carved out a life of her own

00:01:24.685 --> 00:01:26.145
as a singer and songwriter,

00:01:26.800 --> 00:01:28.960
but she was never too far away from

00:01:28.960 --> 00:01:29.620
the paparazzi

00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:31.380
and the gossip columnists.

00:01:32.160 --> 00:01:35.985
Presley died of cardiac arrest January 12th in

00:01:35.985 --> 00:01:36.725
Los Angeles

00:01:37.345 --> 00:01:39.205
after being rushed to the hospital.

00:01:39.905 --> 00:01:40.965
She was 54.

00:01:42.385 --> 00:01:45.230
Presley was 5 when her parents divorced and

00:01:45.230 --> 00:01:46.770
9 when her dad died.

00:01:47.310 --> 00:01:50.190
She was 33 when she released her first

00:01:50.190 --> 00:01:50.690
album,

00:01:50.990 --> 00:01:52.450
"To Whom It May Concern."

00:01:53.175 --> 00:01:55.495
The album was a hit. It reached number

00:01:55.495 --> 00:01:58.475
5 on Billboard's 200 album chart.

00:01:59.015 --> 00:02:01.575
Presley wrote all the melodies and all but

00:02:01.575 --> 00:02:02.475
one of the lyrics.

00:02:03.400 --> 00:02:04.220
"Lights Out"

00:02:05.160 --> 00:02:07.900
was the first single released from the album.

00:02:08.440 --> 00:02:11.400
The lyrics started out talking about her dad's

00:02:11.400 --> 00:02:15.245
death. It reached number 18 on Billboard's adult

00:02:15.305 --> 00:02:16.125
top 40.

00:02:16.825 --> 00:02:18.665
She co-wrote 10 of the songs on

00:02:18.665 --> 00:02:20.605
her second album, "Now What."

00:02:20.910 --> 00:02:24.270
It reached number 9 on Billboard's 200 album

00:02:24.270 --> 00:02:24.770
chart.

00:02:25.230 --> 00:02:26.050
Through technological

00:02:26.510 --> 00:02:29.390
magic, she sang duets with her dad on

00:02:29.390 --> 00:02:30.210
"In the Ghetto"

00:02:30.715 --> 00:02:32.095
and "Don't Cry Daddy."

00:02:32.795 --> 00:02:36.235
Presley's life outside a music studio produced more

00:02:36.235 --> 00:02:37.775
publicity than her music.

00:02:38.155 --> 00:02:39.775
She married four times.

00:02:40.200 --> 00:02:42.780
She had two children with her first husband,

00:02:43.160 --> 00:02:44.220
Danny Keough.

00:02:44.760 --> 00:02:46.920
They were married for six years, but they

00:02:46.920 --> 00:02:49.020
remained friends until she died.

00:02:49.775 --> 00:02:53.135
Her marriage to actor Nicolas Cage lasted four

00:02:53.135 --> 00:02:53.635
months.

00:02:54.255 --> 00:02:57.075
Her most famous marriage was to Michael Jackson.

00:02:57.870 --> 00:02:59.890
Their marriage lasted two years.

Kate:
00:03:01.150 --> 00:03:02.290
This is Kate again.

00:03:02.750 --> 00:03:05.385
Sheldon also writes Song of the Day, a

00:03:05.385 --> 00:03:08.265
music-related story sent daily to an email

00:03:08.265 --> 00:03:09.245
list of subscribers.

00:03:10.025 --> 00:03:12.445
All of those stories and these tributes

00:03:12.825 --> 00:03:14.925
include links to the featured songs.

00:03:15.450 --> 00:03:17.150
In this episode's description,

00:03:17.450 --> 00:03:20.030
you can link to "Lights Out" on YouTube,

00:03:20.330 --> 00:03:22.570
as well as get information on how to

00:03:22.570 --> 00:03:24.510
join Sheldon's subscriber list.

00:03:25.165 --> 00:03:26.545

please check out the next one to brothers

00:03:29.085 --> 00:03:31.265

and share all the tributes with anyone who

00:03:33.805 --> 00:03:34.625

00:03:34.980 --> 00:03:36.440

00:03:36.820 --> 00:03:39.620
into the lives of the talented people who

00:03:39.620 --> 00:03:41.560
created some of the music we love.
