Songwriter Burt Bacharach had an impressive career with more than a thousand artists singing his songs and 70 Billboard Top 40 hits.
This tribute is one of 44 short yet illuminating episodes about significant figures in the music industry who passed away in 2023. My guest Sheldon Zoldan, a longtime writer and newspaper editor, wrote these tributes and recorded them.
To hear the featured song "Walk on By," which was a huge hit for Dionne Warwick, please go to this YouTube video of Bacharach on the piano and Warwick at the mic performing that song and others.
Sheldon also writes Song of the Day, a music-related story sent daily to an email list of subscribers. To get on his subscriber list, email shzoldan@comcast.net with the subject line ADD ME TO SOTD.
And, if you want to learn more about Bacharach, you can check out his memoir, "Anyone Who Had a Heart: My Life and Music," which he wrote with Robert Greenfield.

Kate:
00:00:22.300 --> 00:00:24.880
Hello, and welcome to Everyday Creation,
00:00:25.565 --> 00:00:28.865
a show about living our purpose and lifting
00:00:28.925 --> 00:00:31.905
our vibes for ourselves and the world.
00:00:32.820 --> 00:00:33.960
I'm Kate Jones,
00:00:34.500 --> 00:00:35.640
here with a tribute
00:00:36.020 --> 00:00:36.920
to prolific
00:00:37.300 --> 00:00:37.800
songwriter
00:00:38.420 --> 00:00:39.320
and hitmaker
00:00:40.020 --> 00:00:40.920
Burt Bacharach.
00:00:41.795 --> 00:00:43.255
This is one of 44
00:00:43.715 --> 00:00:45.415
short yet illuminating
00:00:45.795 --> 00:00:46.295
episodes
00:00:46.755 --> 00:00:49.815
about significant figures in the music industry
00:00:50.120 --> 00:00:51.820
who passed away in 2023.
00:00:53.080 --> 00:00:56.680
My guest, Sheldon Zoldan, a longtime writer and
00:00:56.680 --> 00:00:57.740
newspaper editor,
00:00:58.175 --> 00:01:01.295
wrote these tributes and recorded them. Here's what
00:01:01.295 --> 00:01:02.595
he says about Bacharach,
00:01:03.055 --> 00:01:04.835
who died on February 8th
00:01:05.135 --> 00:01:05.875
last year.
Sheldon:
00:01:06.600 --> 00:01:09.320
Burt Bacharach was more than prolific. He was
00:01:09.320 --> 00:01:12.360
damn good. More than a 1,000 artists sang
00:01:12.360 --> 00:01:13.180
his songs;
00:01:13.835 --> 00:01:16.875
70 of his songs became Billboard Top 40
00:01:16.875 --> 00:01:17.375
hits.
00:01:18.315 --> 00:01:21.375
Bacharach died February 8th in Los Angeles.
00:01:21.755 --> 00:01:22.735
He was 94.
00:01:24.190 --> 00:01:26.770
Bacharach made music for seven decades.
00:01:27.310 --> 00:01:30.610
One of his earliest jobs was as Marlene Dietrich's
00:01:30.750 --> 00:01:31.250
accompanist
00:01:32.105 --> 00:01:33.725
for her nightclub act.
00:01:34.505 --> 00:01:36.745
He wrote some country hits in the early
00:01:36.745 --> 00:01:37.245
1960s,
00:01:37.865 --> 00:01:40.380
including "Story of My Life" and "The Man
00:01:40.380 --> 00:01:42.240
Who Shot Liberty Valance."
00:01:43.420 --> 00:01:45.660
He and Hal David hooked up in the
00:01:45.660 --> 00:01:46.480
late 1950s.
00:01:47.335 --> 00:01:49.815
They wrote more than a 100 songs together
00:01:49.815 --> 00:01:51.035
in the early 1960s.
00:01:52.055 --> 00:01:55.175
They wrote 39 straight songs that reached the
00:01:55.175 --> 00:01:57.560
singles chart over the next decade.
00:01:58.260 --> 00:02:00.840
They discovered Dionne Warwick in 1961.
00:02:02.420 --> 00:02:04.760
Bacharach and David quit their collaboration
00:02:05.140 --> 00:02:07.565
after disagreements led to lawsuits.
00:02:08.505 --> 00:02:11.405
Warwick filed a lawsuit saying they abandoned
00:02:11.705 --> 00:02:12.205
her.
00:02:13.110 --> 00:02:14.410
Carole Bayer Sager
00:02:14.790 --> 00:02:17.690
became his new writing partner and his wife.
00:02:17.910 --> 00:02:21.270
They wrote several hits, including Warwick's "That's What
00:02:21.270 --> 00:02:22.330
Friends Are For."
00:02:24.535 --> 00:02:27.415
Bacharach and David were a hot commodity when
00:02:27.415 --> 00:02:29.015
it came to writing for the movies. They
00:02:29.015 --> 00:02:31.495
won two Oscars for "Butch Cassidy and the
00:02:31.495 --> 00:02:31.995
Sundance
00:02:32.450 --> 00:02:32.950
Kid,"
00:02:33.330 --> 00:02:36.070
including "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head."
00:02:36.530 --> 00:02:39.010
The song reached number 1 on the Billboard
00:02:39.010 --> 00:02:40.550
Hot 100 chart.
00:02:41.485 --> 00:02:43.905
Bacharach wrote the music and David
00:02:44.445 --> 00:02:46.285
wrote the lyrics for our song of the
00:02:46.285 --> 00:02:49.585
day, "Walk on By" for Warwick in 1964.
00:02:50.860 --> 00:02:53.580
The song was the first time Bacharach used
00:02:53.580 --> 00:02:55.200
two baby grand pianos
00:02:55.580 --> 00:02:57.120
in a studio recording.
00:02:57.955 --> 00:02:59.955
The song was supposed to be the B
00:02:59.955 --> 00:03:02.455
side to "Any Old Time of Day."
00:03:03.075 --> 00:03:03.575
Influential
00:03:04.115 --> 00:03:06.940
New York DJ Murray the K would only
00:03:06.940 --> 00:03:09.100
play the B side. He thought it was
00:03:09.100 --> 00:03:09.680
the hit.
00:03:10.060 --> 00:03:11.040
He was right.
00:03:11.340 --> 00:03:14.780
The song revived Warwick's career. It reached number
00:03:14.780 --> 00:03:15.840
6 on Billboard's
00:03:16.275 --> 00:03:16.775
Hot
00:03:17.315 --> 00:03:17.815
100.
Kate:
00:03:18.195 --> 00:03:19.415
This is Kate again.
