Kate Jones

Writer/editor Sheldon Zoldan is the creator of Song of the Day, a music-related story sent daily to a list of subscribers. In the past couple of years, he's also written and recorded tributes to music industry greats who are no longer with us.

In this episode, we're focusing on brothers Robbie Bachman and Tim Bachman, two of the founders of Bachman-Turner Overdrive. This is one of Sheldon's 44 tributes to artists, songwriters and producers who passed away in 2023. To hear “Roll On Down The Highway,” the song referenced in the tribute, go to the YouTube video.

The public domain photo in the chapters is courtesy of Mercury Records and appered in Billboard in September 1974. You can download a copy here

And to get on Sheldon’s Song of the Day subscriber list, email shzoldan@comcast.net with the subject line ADD ME TO SOTD.

The tributes in this series are fascinating glimpses into the lives and impact of those who made the soundtracks of our lives. Although some of Sheldon's subjects are less famous than others, you may find that their songs and stories are equally worth your time. I sure did.

Audio engineer Mike Villegas (who’s also a musician) and I will publish the rest of the 44 tributes in the coming days or weeks. Hope you enjoy them.

This is Kate Jones. Thank you for listening to the show!

Available on Apple, Spotify, Audible and in other directories, and on YouTube.

Kate:
00:00:22.460 --> 00:00:25.280
Hello, and welcome to Everyday Creation,

00:00:25.875 --> 00:00:28.295
a show about living our purpose

00:00:28.595 --> 00:00:31.095
and lifting our vibes for ourselves

00:00:31.555 --> 00:00:32.455
and the world.

00:00:33.120 --> 00:00:34.180
I'm Kate Jones,

00:00:34.560 --> 00:00:35.780
here with a tribute

00:00:36.160 --> 00:00:38.100
to brothers Robbie Bachman

00:00:38.560 --> 00:00:39.620
and Tim Bachman,

00:00:40.325 --> 00:00:41.625
two of the founders

00:00:42.165 --> 00:00:46.185
of the Canadian rock band Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

00:00:47.550 --> 00:00:49.490
This is one of 44

00:00:50.030 --> 00:00:51.730
short, yet illuminating

00:00:52.110 --> 00:00:52.610
episodes

00:00:53.230 --> 00:00:56.370
about significant figures in the music industry

00:00:56.835 --> 00:00:58.855
who passed away in 2023.

00:01:00.675 --> 00:01:02.535
My guest, Sheldon Zoldan,

00:01:03.155 --> 00:01:05.735
a longtime writer and newspaper editor,

00:01:06.100 --> 00:01:08.360
wrote the tributes and recorded them.

00:01:08.820 --> 00:01:11.160
Here's what he says about the Bachman Brothers

00:01:11.460 --> 00:01:13.780
who died less than four months apart last

00:01:13.780 --> 00:01:14.280
year.

Sheldon:
00:01:15.345 --> 00:01:17.745
2023 was a year of sadness for the

00:01:17.745 --> 00:01:18.885
Bachman family.

00:01:19.745 --> 00:01:23.765
Robbie Bachman died January 12th in Vancouver, British

00:01:23.825 --> 00:01:24.325
Columbia.

00:01:25.010 --> 00:01:26.790
No cause of death was given.

00:01:27.090 --> 00:01:28.070
He was 69.

00:01:29.250 --> 00:01:32.370
Brother Tim died of cancer April 28th in

00:01:32.370 --> 00:01:33.510
Winnipeg, Manitoba.

00:01:34.255 --> 00:01:35.235
He was 71.

00:01:36.415 --> 00:01:38.815
"I've lost my three brothers in the past

00:01:38.815 --> 00:01:42.175
couple of years," Randy Bachman, the founding member

00:01:42.175 --> 00:01:44.060
of Bachman-Turner Overdrive

00:01:44.600 --> 00:01:46.060
told the Canadian Press.

00:01:46.440 --> 00:01:47.660
"My heart is heavy."

00:01:48.600 --> 00:01:51.395
Robbie, Tim and Randy Bachman along with Fred

00:01:51.395 --> 00:01:54.135
Turner joined forces in the early 1970s.

00:01:55.555 --> 00:01:57.975
Robbie played drums and Tim guitar.

00:01:59.040 --> 00:02:01.860
Robbie joined Randy in Brave Belt in 1971.

00:02:02.880 --> 00:02:05.200
Tim joined a year later, and they became

00:02:05.200 --> 00:02:06.740
Bachman-Turner Overdrive,

00:02:07.515 --> 00:02:10.255
sometimes known as BTO in 1973.

00:02:11.595 --> 00:02:14.415
They had five top 40 albums,

00:02:14.890 --> 00:02:18.410
six U.S. top 40 singles, and 11 top

00:02:18.410 --> 00:02:19.950
40 singles in Canada

00:02:20.330 --> 00:02:21.390
between 1973

00:02:22.570 --> 00:02:23.070
76.

00:02:23.885 --> 00:02:25.665
Tim left the group in 1974;

00:02:26.685 --> 00:02:28.145
Robbie left in 1977.

00:02:29.565 --> 00:02:31.825
Neither left on good terms with Randy.

00:02:32.490 --> 00:02:35.290
Robbie battled Randy over the name, giving the

00:02:35.290 --> 00:02:37.630
band permission to continue as BTO,

00:02:38.170 --> 00:02:40.190
but not Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

00:02:41.015 --> 00:02:43.915
He and his brother never reconciled their differences,

00:02:44.295 --> 00:02:46.455
though they played together at a couple of

00:02:46.455 --> 00:02:47.435
award ceremonies.

00:02:48.390 --> 00:02:51.130
Tim made his own headlines. He was accused

00:02:51.190 --> 00:02:54.010
twice of sexual assault against a minor.

00:02:54.550 --> 00:02:56.890
The first time, he was found not guilty

00:02:57.405 --> 00:02:59.265
and the second case was dropped.

00:02:59.725 --> 00:03:01.725
Tim and Robbie wrote a few songs for

00:03:01.725 --> 00:03:04.340
the band. Our song of the day, "Roll

00:03:04.340 --> 00:03:07.060
On Down The Highway," co-written by Robbie

00:03:07.060 --> 00:03:09.000
and Turner, was the most successful.

00:03:09.860 --> 00:03:12.035
They wrote it for a Ford commercial but

00:03:12.035 --> 00:03:14.195
the automaker didn't use it, so they turned

00:03:14.195 --> 00:03:15.255
it into a hit.

00:03:15.555 --> 00:03:18.435
The song reached number 18 on Billboard's Hot

00:03:18.435 --> 00:03:21.060
100 in the U.S. and number 4 in

00:03:21.060 --> 00:03:21.560
Canada.

Kate:
00:03:23.060 --> 00:03:24.280
This is Kate again.

00:03:24.660 --> 00:03:27.435
Sheldon also writes Song of the Day, a

00:03:27.435 --> 00:03:30.635
music-related story sent daily to an email

00:03:30.635 --> 00:03:31.535
list of subscribers.

00:03:32.395 --> 00:03:33.615
All of those stories

00:03:33.915 --> 00:03:34.975
and these tributes

00:03:35.430 --> 00:03:37.610
include links to the featured songs.

00:03:38.150 --> 00:03:39.770
In this episode's description,

00:03:40.150 --> 00:03:42.470
you can link to "Roll On Down The

00:03:42.470 --> 00:03:43.770
Highway" on YouTube,

as well as get information

00:03:45.955 --> 00:03:47.575
on how to join Sheldon's

00:03:47.955 --> 00:03:49.175
subscriber list.

00:03:50.275 --> 00:03:51.895

please check out the next one to David

00:03:54.220 --> 00:03:54.720

and share all the tributes with anyone who

00:03:57.900 --> 00:03:59.920
might appreciate well-researched

00:04:00.375 --> 00:04:00.875
glimpses

00:04:01.335 --> 00:04:03.755
into the lives of the talented people

00:04:04.055 --> 00:04:06.395
who created some of the music we love.

00:04:07.015 --> 00:04:09.730
